Lowveld
The Lowveld is one of those places where the character of Africa is hard to miss. A landscape with big rivers, open savanna, thick bushveld and ancient trees, where the country can change completely within the space of a few kilometres. Some of South Africa’s most sought after hunting destinations are found here, including properties forming part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR), where wildlife moves freely across large, unfenced areas much as it always has.
This is fantastic hunting country. Hunts may involve quietly working your way into a herd of buffalo, picking your way through thick bush after a lone dagga boy, or finding yourself only a few metres from a mature elephant bull, studying his movements, judging ivory and deciding whether he is right to pursue. The terrain here can range from open grassland to dense woodland and riverine country, with good numbers of plains game and the possibility of encountering any of the Big Five on foot while hunting.
What sets these areas apart is that wildlife here is part of a naturally functioning ecosystem. These are established wild populations, not animals maintained through regular stocking or intensive management for hunting. Hunting is conducted within strict sustainability protocols, with quotas and offtakes determined to ensure the long term sustainability of hunting within the ecosystem. The animals remain part of a broader, naturally functioning system, and the sustainable offtakes removed from these populations are one part of a larger conservation model which is supported through sustainable resource use.
The Lowveld offers hunting where the surroundings are as much a part of the experience as the animal being pursued. There is never a guarantee of what the day will bring. Game moves freely, conditions change and every hunt has to be approached differently. Combined with the scale and beauty of the landscape, the Lowveld offers a remarkable setting for hunters looking for an authentic African hunting experience.
